How to Choose a Private School

Choosing the right school for your child can be an overwhelming experience and requires careful planning and preparation. One absolute in this process is do your research until you are comfortable with everything that you know about the school you are researching.

The first thing to consider is the unique needs of the student. Look for private schools that have the same goals and beliefs as your student and family. Not every student is the same.

Make a list of all the “wants” you would like a school to have. If the student is athletic you would want to look for a school with a great athletic program, what about foreign languages, is your child interested in pursuing a specific passion? If so, find a school that will let them expound on that passion, giving it room and guidance to grow. Do they like animals, the ocean, or the mountains? Are they talented in drama or arts? Do you want you child to attend a school with more or less than 400 children. What type of religious affiliation do they have? There are even schools out there with special diets offered.

Check into how many college graduates a particular private school has had. Which colleges have accepted students belonging to the ones that you are looking into applying for? Also, if you have a student who has learning abilities, does the school you are researching have facilities to help your student or do they even accept students with disabilities. Find out what Associations the school belongs to and definitely make sure that it is accredited.

TOUR THE SCHOOL. Take your student with you (most private schools require this) and find out everything there is to know about the school. You can get a first hand look at what goes on, talk with staff and students alike, but feel comfortable with the questions that you have asked before you leave the campus.
